An exceptional vineyard in the Médoc
Located in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, in the commune of Saint-Sauveur-en-Médoc, a few kilometers from Pauillac and the Gironde estuary, Château Peyrabon benefits from an exceptional terroir. Its vines, with an average age of 29 years, produce wines, classified as Cru Bourgeois, of remarkable quality.
A mosaic of terroirs in a
verdant setting
The saying goes that “great grapes come from great terroirs.” Superbly situated in a verdant setting, the Château Peyrabon vineyard is planted on a gravelly slope, the ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon.
These well-drained soils of Garonne gravel, deposited along the river during the Günz glacial period, rest on the clay subsoil of Château Peyrabon. This allows for excellent grape ripeness thanks to the heat absorbed during the day and released at night.
In addition to the soil composition, Château Peyrabon enjoys a privileged location near the river, benefiting from a temperate climate influenced by the Atlantic.
By meticulously studying the terroir, the vineyard teams have been able to create a precise parcel division, allowing each plot to express its unique character.
Today, the Château Peyrabon vineyard is divided into 33 parcels, all adjoining the château, the oldest being over 70 years old.
It is through their knowledge of this terroir, its identity, and its diversity that the Château Peyrabon team succeeds in crafting a wine of singular richness and complexity each year. In this Haut-Médoc region, the terroir guides the work of both the vineyard and the cellar. All that remains is to reveal its potential.
Grape varieties and terroirs
Because a vineyard is a unified whole where each plot must be appreciated for its unique character, the terroir-grape variety pairing is the driving force behind the winemaking process at Château Peyrabon.
At Château Peyrabon, the vineyard’s grape varieties are dominated by the emblematic red grape of the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), complemented by Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (3%).
Each grape variety is therefore adapted to the specific characteristics of the soils and exposures, contributing its full range of qualities while preserving its individuality until the final blend, which reveals the personality of the wine. This is how the wines of Château Peyrabon reach their full potential.
Vineyard work :
from grapes to harvest
With passion and expertise, a team of fifteen people provides meticulous care throughout the year, working each plot individually.
By adapting their work to the vines with the utmost respect for the environment and by carrying out the necessary care according to a plot-by-plot approach, while taking into account the nature of the different soil profiles, the wines of Château Peyrabon are crafted.
Pruning, bud removal, bending, trellising, shoot thinning, green harvesting, leaf removal, and judicious treatments from May to August—life at Château Peyrabon is punctuated by the various tasks following the vine’s growth cycle.
Harvested by hand between the end of September and the beginning of October, the grapes are picked at the optimal ripeness of each plot using a berry detection system. The use of Multiplex® technology allows for the evaluation, before harvesting, of the quantity and quality of anthocyanins in the grapes to measure their maturity. Each berry undergoes rigorous selection in the vineyard, where an initial manual sorting takes place. Since 2017, optical sorting has been implemented upon the berries’ arrival at the winery, ensuring that only the finest grapes are retained. The batches are then vinified separately in tanks, according to their yield and ripeness.
